CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF ILSE JOHANNA HESS
February 9, 1914 - November 12, 2003
MY MOTHER, ILSE HESS Marion Ein-Lewin
By any measure, by any marker, our mother, Ilse Hess, was an extraordinary human being. She experienced the unspeakable cruelty and horror of the Holocaust, but she represented the epitome of warmth, graciousness and kindness.
MOM Steven Hess
During the past couple of weeks, at times I suddenly have the fleeting thought—I NEED TO PHONE MOM. Frankly, she was pretty insistent about calling her and it had long been a part of my morning routine on the drive to work.
ILSE AND MUSIC Larry Lewin
First, let me thank all of you for your joining us here today to celebrate the life of a great woman and a dear friend. My official role here today is to speak about the place that music played in Ilse’s life and to introduce some pieces that recognize that.

MY GRANDMA: MY HERO Mark D. Ein
...My Grandma is my hero because of her Bravery and her Courage. Her bravery saved our family. Without her heroism, I wouldn't be here today as the oldest of my generation... neither would my brother Jon, nor my cousins Michael, Danny, David, or Suzanne...and of course, neither would the next generation of Eli, Jacob, or Alexandra.
THE UNWRITTEN POEM Michael Hess
Ninety years,
Well, close enough
Most of them happy,
Some of them rough.
A good bit of tsuris
But plenty of fun
MEMORIAL SPEECH FOR ILSE HESS Jon Ein
It is an honor for me to say a few words about my grandma. I do not know first hand about most of grandma’s life. I did not know her as a beautiful young woman who scandalously married an older man, my grandpa. I did not know the cosmopolitan young mother, living in Amsterdam.
GRANDMA Daniel E. Hess
I'm very far from the first, and I won't be the last, to say that my grandmother had almost superhuman strength and determination. As long as I knew her, she seemed to defy so many of the rules of life and physics.
